The emphasis on personal readiness for self-sacrifice in this letter was both a reflection of George's sense of duty and also somewhat typical of the often overblown rhetoric of the period. The theme of the royal body under threat was an aspect of the king as neo-Classical hero that needs to be set beside the more accessible post-war image of ‘Farmer George’. As neo-Classical hero, however, George was distinctive in being a self-consciously and self-proclaimed Christian one. Certain in his own fortitude, George expected the same of others: ‘no man has a right to talk of leaving me at this hour.’127 He played a crucial role in keeping the ministry focused on the war. Indeed, on 21 June 1779 he met the cabinet, defended the American policy and pressed for the ministers' support.128 George thought it necessary to face challenges and not to procrastinate:

my mind always inclines to meet difficulties as they arise, and I would much rather have them soon fall on my head if not to be avoided than to know that in future that must inevitably happen. Public men ought always to act on system.129
